2024 Reflections

Gratitude, Highlights, and What’s Ahead

As 2024 comes to a close, we reflect on a year filled with joy, success, challenges, and invaluable learning.

Guided by our mission to preserve, protect, and perpetuate Nisenan Culture, we celebrate the milestones achieved with your support.

Highlights of 2024

Homeland Return Campaign: After a tremendously successful grassroots campaign, CHIRP fundraised over $2.5 million dollars and escrow closed in September 2024 following a lengthy negotiation with local government, the sellers, and county code enforcement. The purchase and rematriation of Yulića provides a tremendous potential for stability and healing for the Tribe, the environment, and the fabric of the Sierra Nevada foothills community.

Land + People

Yulića Tribal Housing: Five Tribal families are now housed on Yulića. CHIRP continues to work to bring the land and infrastructure into compliance with the State of California and Nevada County code, and hopes to provide housing to additional Tribal members under the existing Conditional Use Permit.

Tribal Health and Wellness: In 2024, CHIRP advanced its Tribal Wellness initiatives, supporting programs focused on Tribal Youth development, Tribal healthcare workers and liaisons, and Elder care. These efforts aim to address the profound impacts of historical trauma by fostering healing through Cultural connection and engagement. Looking ahead, these programs will find a dedicated home at the future Tribal Wellness Hub at Yulića, further strengthening the Tribe’s health and resilience.

Tribal Land Restoration Crew: A seven-member, Tribally-led team earned certification and began critical on-the-ground work to restore local ecosystems. Their efforts incorporate Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) to support healthy landscapes and implement Culturally-informed burns.

Art + Culture

‘UBA SEO: Nisenan Arts + Culture: This year, CHIRP’s Visibility Through Art initiative brought powerful exhibits to life, sharing Tribal stories and confronting the erasure of the Nisenan people. Highlights included the Story of Land, Water, and People exhibit, which explored the interconnected relationship between the NCR Nisenan Tribe and their Ancestral Homelands. The gallery continues to serve as an inspiring space for education and engagement, amplifying the Tribe’s Cultural heritage and history.

Nisenan Language Revitalization: The language team and advisors made significant strides in creating new publications and digital tools, including a writing system and keyboard resources. These efforts are revitalizing the Nisenan language and ensuring its accessibility for future generations.

Cultural Revitalization at Yulića: With the acquisition of Yulića, the Tribe has unlocked a new layer of recovering their relationship with their Ancestral Homelands. As Tribal members have moved onto the Land, they have begun to revive their spiritual and Cultural land-based practices.

Truth + Visibility

Community Education: CHIRP continued to educate the broader community about Nisenan history and identity, providing accessible resources through facilitated lectures, community workshops, and an updated learning resources page. These efforts deepen understanding, foster connection, and amplify the Tribe’s voice.

Capacity and Fund Development: This year, CHIRP also expanded it’s internal growth through hiring key staff and expanding organizational capacity. These developments are critical to ensuring long-term sustainability of CHIRP as the NCR Tribe’s nonprofit, and its ability to fulfill the mission of ensuring the Tribal community thrives in its Ancestral Homeland.

Looking Ahead to 2025

As we reflect on the successes of 2024, we turn our focus to the opportunities and challenges of the coming year. CHIRP is poised to continue its vital work, advancing initiatives that honor the past while building a sustainable future for the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe.

Federal Recognition: The fight for federal recognition remains central to CHIRP's mission, as restoring sovereignty is crucial for securing the Tribe's future. With each passing year, this work grows more urgent to honor Tribal Elders and ensure the survival of Cultural and re-establishing the Tribe’s legal rights.

Tribal Intern Programs: In 2025, CHIRP aims to expand its intern programs by engaging individuals skilled in language revitalization, as well as policy and governmental relations. These programs build capacity for the Tribe and provide invaluable support to key initiatives like federal recognition and Cultural preservation.

New Cultural Exhibits: CHIRP will unveil Pamblo, a groundbreaking exhibit exploring the legacy of an erased Nisenan leader. This exhibit will deepen public understanding of Nisenan history and amplify the voices of Tribal ancestors.

Land Rematriation: The Landback movement continues to offer opportunities for reconnecting the Tribe with their Ancestral Homelands. In 2025, CHIRP will pursue land rematriation efforts to strengthen the Tribe’s cultural foundation and promote environmental stewardship. If you have land that you would like to donate, please reach out to explore the possibilities.
