“I want to do what I can to support the return of land illegally taken from the Nisenan. It is inconceivable that the Nevada City Rancheria has still not been restored to this day, and I hope that I can contribute to aiding the Nisenan's Homeland Return. I grew up in Nevada City, which instilled me with both a deep love of nature and a feeling of community, and so it feels necessary to help give back to that community.”

About the Artist: Miles Toland grew his roots in the artistic city of Santa Fe and is currently making art in the woods of Nevada City. His creative juices have been squeezed from the fruits of graffiti culture, a BFA at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, live painting at festivals, and traveling around the world creating street art in places including Paris, Switzerland, Art Basel Miami, Mexico, Canada, and India. His mural series at the Beatles Ashram in Rishikesh has been published in the Smithsonian Magazine and The New York Times blog. Another one of his murals in India was readapted to be featured as the artwork in the second season of the AMC show Better Call Saul. Miles’ work finds an even split between studio art and street art.

“I have lived in Nevada County and Grass Valley for the past 8 years and have witnessed my relationships, career, and life prosper as a result of living here. It only feels right to give back to the original peoples of this land I now call home. It’s crazy that the Nisenan even have to fundraiser to buy land back that was stolen from them. I believe we are waking up to the brutal reality of our human history and we need to do our best to show respect and restore some justice and balance to those who have been unfairly treated.”

This painting was created for my 2016 solo show Fire and Water where I focused on the delicate balance of each of these elements for humans existence on the earth. Fire and Water are essential for human existence but when thrown out of balance, each element can have catastrophic consequences. This was a piece from that series.

“Having lived in Nevada County for around 15 years, and having learned more and more over the years about the Nisenan still living here today and their ongoing perseverance to be recognized and have their history understood - I am wanting to do all I can to help this cause. Since I am unable to donate finances at this time, my hope is that my art can help to fundraise for this important project, getting tribal lands back in the hands of the Nisenan here today.”

“Hour of Infinity - Eternal Returning” - Acrylic on Canvas Original Painting

Value: $888

Orignial Acrylic on Canvas Painting, 30x20"

This artwork was created in collaboration with musical artist Ayla Nereo, as part of the Womxn | Nature Project which shared ecofeminist stories through interviews and narrative artworks. This artwork is both about time and timelessness. We are living at a point in history that feels crucial and pressing, a tipping point of change and urgency with our environment. At the same moment life will go on no matter what, the Earth will change and continue within the landscape of what is eternal.

About the Artist: Ayla Nereo is a singer, composer, producer, dancer, and visual-poetry creator raised among the Northern California forests and rivers. Called a “bridger of sound,” Ayla dances between timeless and modern, with a particular joy for cross-pollinating musical styles. Her songs seem a genre unto their own, as she moves between vocal looping, produced beats, live drumming, orchestral string arrangements, Celtic melodies, disco rhythms, electronic soundscapes, and even dashes of hip-hop wordplay. Having an uncanny ability to crack open the heart, Ayla's music is an ode to the wonder of being human, inviting us deeper into the exquisite and innately psychedelic dream of this moment.

“I want to do what I can to support this land returning to the Nisenan, because I live on unceded Nisenan territory.”
